The
Monteverde Conservation League (MCL) is a non-profit organization
dedicated to the conservation of the tropical forest. Our mission is
to Conserve, Preserve, and Rehabilitate Tropical Ecosystems and their Biodiversity.
Founded
in 1986 in Monteverde, the MCL began a land purchase campaign to
conserve the tropical forest. Currently, our organization has
achieved the formation of the largest private reserve in Costa Rica:
The Children's Eternal Rain Forest (CERF). This has been possible
thanks to the support of children, adults, schools and organizations
around the world.
At the organization level, the MCL has 70 active
members who are involved in an Annual
Meeting. The composition of
the members as to nationalities, background and philosophy is
diverse, but all with the common goal to conserve the
forest.
At the
administrative level, the MCL has three priority areas: Protection and
Management, Environment and Human
Development, and
Research and Applied
Technology.
The MCL has carried out various projects in the area of
influence and within CERF. Through the reforestation program,
"Forest in Farms" project and the "Guacimal Watershed" project we
have planted nearly 600,000 trees as windbreaks, watershed
restoration and forest connection in the Pacific slope. On the other
hand, we have planted over 100,000 trees in the Atlantic slope along
forest belts and forest connections. Research projects on endangered
species are being carried out within CERF.
